This lecture will discuss the functions of bioactive molecules, using drugs as examples. The background of the bioactive molecules will also be discussed. |

1. Outline and introduction of this lecture (how to proceed, evaluation, etc., drug-biomolecule interactions) 2. What are biologically active substances (differences between pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, and functional foods)? 3. In search of magic bullet (1) (History of antibiotics and functions of sulfa drugs) 4. In search of magic bullet (2) (History of Penicillin and Mechanism of Action) 5. In search of the magic bullet (3) (The mechanism of antibiotic resistance and the evolution of antibiotics) 6. Fight against cancer (1) (turkey X disease, anticancer drugs as alkylating agents) 7. Fight against cancer (2) (imatinib, methotrexate, and Herceptin) 8. Viruses and Influenza (Influenza mechanism and Tamiflu and Relenza) 9. Fight against AIDS (zidovudine and Kaletra) 10. Lowering Blood Pressure (Renin Inhibitors and Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors) 11. Anticoagulants, Diabetes Drugs (Argatroban and Insulin) 12. Please read the textbook before the class. Students are required to submit a mini-report for each class. It is recommended to read the organic chemistry and biochemistry textbooks for confirmation. It will be helpful to use molecular modeling programs such as RASMOL to confirm the 3D structure of the bioactive molecules used in the lecture. |
