授業としての具体的到達目標
/Concrete arrival target as the class
Have basic knowledge of the following items (ability to see through).
〇Basic monosaccharide structure.
〇Nomenclature of oligosaccharides and polysaccharides, and the relationship between name and structure.
〇Structure, function, manufacturing method, etc. of oligosaccharides used in health foods, etc.
〇 Sugar chain structure and classification of complex carbohydrates such as glycoproteins.
〇Relationship between microbial and viral infections and cell surface sugar chains.
授業の概要
/Summary of the class
There is a widespread misconception that carbohydrates are sweet and cause weight gain. Glycochemistry, which began in ancient times with sugar and starch, has now expanded to a vast range of related fields, including microbial infections and blood types, with the latest theme being the role of sugar chains in molecular recognition. This lecture will begin with basic carbohydrate chemistry and provide an overview of the various structures and functions of carbohydrates, proteins and enzymes related to carbohydrates, and the relationship of sugar chains to life phenomena.
授業の内容予定
/Contents plan of the class
This class is an intensive lecture.
[Part 1]
1. Basics and nomenclature of carbohydrate chemistry
2. Structure, names, and isomers of monosaccharides
3. Various monosaccharides, sweetness levels, sugar alcohols, etc.
4. Oligosaccharides (1)/Various oligosaccharides
Summary and review

[Part 2]
5. What is transglycosylation reaction?
6. Oligosaccharide (2), dental caries and sugar transfer reaction

14. About lectins・Microbial infection and sugar chains・Viral infection and sugar chains
15. Proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans
Summary and review

(The progress may vary slightly depending on your level of understanding of the lesson content.)
成績評価方法及び採点基準
/A scholastic evaluation method and marking standard
At the end of Parts 1, 2, and 3, there will be a summary and review.
The answers to these questions will be evaluated as 100%. Details will be explained in class.
(Please note that due to circumstances related to coronavirus infection and prevention, the exam may be conducted remotely. In that case, the exam will be conducted using Teams and Forms, but details will be communicated in advance.) .)
予習及び復習等の内容
/Contents such as preparations for lessons and the review
[Preparation] The class begins with a basic lecture on carbohydrates, which will be easier to understand if you have a background in basic organic chemistry, biochemistry, enzyme chemistry, etc. in particular
〇Many structural formulas of carbohydrates appear. Those who have studied the structure of monosaccharides may want to review it.
〇Basic parts of organic chemistry (isomers, chemical bonds, etc.)
〇Cell structures of microorganisms, plants, and animals (intracellular organs, cell walls)
教材・教科書
/The teaching materials, textbook
〇Due to the wide range of topics covered, no specific book will be used as a textbook.
〇 Materials used for each class will be distributed via Teams. Distribution of distributed materials to others via the web, email, or other electronic media is strictly prohibited.
参考文献
/bibliography
〇I recommend the following books as reference books.
“Invitation to Glycoscience” Sankyo Publishing (ISBN 978-4-7827-0519-3)
“Science and Engineering of Carbohydrates” Kodansha (ISBN 4-06-139783-4)
“Introduction to Glycobiology” Chemistry Doujin (ISBN 978-4759810356)
〇I may use sections related to carbohydrates from Vought's ``Basic Biochemistry, 5th Edition''.
留意点・予備知識
/Point to keep in mind, back ground
〇The content of this class is deeply related to biochemistry I/II, applied microbiology, enzyme chemistry, etc.
〇You will develop an intellectual and proactive attitude through the act of writing with your own hands and taking notes. Make sure to take proper notes.
〇Forms will be used for attendance, assignments, etc., and Teams will be used for distribution/collection and class communication. Please install Teams as an app on your own device. In addition, if you transition to remote classes to prevent coronavirus infection, please prepare an internet environment such as Wifi.
授業内容に関する質問・疑義等
/Question, doubt about class contents
〇I recommend using Teams chat for individual questions and answers.
