授業の概要 /Summary of the class |
This course introduces students to history through a Content and English Integrated Learning (CEIL) approach, combining historical inquiry with English language development. Over 15 weeks, students will explore key historiographical concepts, thematic historical analysis, and comparative approaches while developing critical thinking and academic communication skills. The course is divided into four thematic blocks: Concepts and Challenges in Historiography. Students begin by examining fundamental questions about history and historiography, the nature of historical sources, and issues of subjectivity in historical writing. Themes in Historical Analysis. This block explores major analytical themes, such as historical change and continuity, the relationship between history and power, and the ways in which history is used to legitimise authority. History Genres and Comparative Approaches. Students investigate different historiographical approaches, including social history, memory studies, and comparative history. The role of technology in shaping historical events is also examined. History as Practice. The final block focuses on the craft of historical writing and ethical considerations in historical interpretation. The course concludes with student presentations of final projects. Throughout the class, students will engage in discussions, analytical exercises, and presentations, aiming to enhance their historiographical thinking and their ability to apply academic English. |

Week 2: Understanding Historical Sources - Primary vs. Secondary Sources Week 3: The Historian as an Unreliable Narrator - Subjectivity in Historical Writing Week 4: Orientalism and Eurocentrism - Viewing "the Other" in History Week 5: History in Images and Media - The Role of Visual Representations Block 2: Themes in Historical Analysis Week 6: Historical Change and Continuity - Identifying Patterns in History Week 7: Power and History - History as a Tool of Power Week 8: Midterm Project Presentations Block 3: History Genres and Comparative Approaches Week 9: Social History and Everyday Life - History Beyond Leaders and Battles Week 10: Memory and History - Collective Memory and Forgetting Week 11: Comparative History - Lessons from Comparing Events Week 12: History and Technology - The Impact of Technology on Historical Events Block 4: History as Practice Week 13: Writing History - Crafting Historical Narratives Week 14: Ethical Issues in History - Ethical Considerations and Historical Interpretation Week 15: Final Project Presentations Students will be notified in class or by e-mail in the event of changes to the class schedule. |
