授業の概要 ／Summary of the class	この授業で、学生は日本における文学、聴覚、および視覚的な大衆文化を鑑賞して分析し、「近代」および「ポストモダン」に関する基本的な知識を得る。内容は近代から現代に渡り、短編小説、音楽、アニメ、映画など、多ジャンルのメディア媒体を学習する。授業は「早期の大衆文化」「都会化のホラー」「異界と身体」そして「世界の終焉」といった四つの大きなユニットからなっており、環境被害、核戦争、近代的な主体性、テクノロジーなど、多様なテーマを取り扱うことになる。 ＊授業での講義・ディスカッションは原則英語で行うが、必要に応じて補助的に日本語を使うことがある。 ＊授業や宿題で視聴する動画は日本語の音声に英語の字幕が付く。読む宿題は基本として言語が選択できる。 In this course, students will read, watch, listen to and then analyze various forms of Japanese popular culture and gain basic knowledge about modernity and postmodernity. The class contents range from the early modern to the contemporary, and texts will be from a variety of media including short stories, music, anime, and film. The class is divided into four units, "Early Examples," "Horror of the City," "Otherworlds, Other Bodies," and "Apocalypse," and we will touch on themes such as environmental damage, nuclear war, modern subjectivity, and technology. ＊Class lectures and discussion will primarily be held in English, but Japanese may be used to supplement when necessary. ＊Videos used in class and for homework will use Japanese voice with English subtitles. Homework readings will be provided in both English and Japanese whenever possible."

予習及び復習等の内容 ／Contents such as preparations for lessons and the review	［予習］毎週、授業の前に作品を熟読し、クラス・ディスカッションを基にする短い考察文を書くこと。 Carefully read assignments before class and prepare notes for class discussion each week. ［復習］毎週、授業内容をノートで記録し、以降の授業のクラス・ディスカッションなどで参照すること。 Write and organize notes after each class, and refer to them in future class discussions.
