授業としての具体的到達目標／Concrete arrival target as the class	This class introduces the academic subject of linguistics and considers applications oriented towards cultural investigations of language content. The course develops a "toolkit" for analysing sentences of Japanese and English. Seeing text analysed is to see the embodiment of grammatical understanding. This will equip students with skills to criticise and improve their own language use through observing implications drawn from rich grammatical analysis.
授業の概要／Summary of the class	Each class will introduce more of the analysis toolkit and show how to apply the toolkit to real textual materials, including students own work.
授業の内容予定／Contents plan of the class	授業計画第1回 10月5日: Introduction - taking language expressions apart 第2回 10月14日: A hierarchy of layers (word > phrase > clause > sentence) 第3回 10月19日: Phrase head words (nouns, adjectives, adverbs) 第4回 10月26日: Verbs 第5回 11月2日: Functional / Connective words 第6回 11月16日: Phrases - noun phrases 第7回 11月30日: Phrases - adjective phrases, adverb phrases, preposition phrases 第8回 12月7日: Clauses - transitivity, grammatical roles 第9回 12月14日: Auxiliaries in the clause, Voice, Polarity 第10回 12月21日: Adverbials in the clause 第11回 1月7日: Clause types (declaratives, interrogatives, imperatives, etc.) 第12回 1月12日: Subordination of clause content 第13回 1月18日: Coordination of clause content 第14回 1月25日: Creating a parsed corpus (a database of grammatically analysed sentences) 第15回 2月1日: Visualizing grammatical dependencies 2月1日: 定期試験験
成績評価方法及び採点基準／A scholastic evaluation method and marking standard	In course participation 20%, assignments 20%, midterm test 30%, and final test 30%. 上記を合算して,最終的な成績評価を行う予定です。All of your submitted assignments must have been written by you. You must not use generative AI to produce the work that you submit.
予習及び復習等の内容／Contents such as preparations for lessons and the review	Lecture notes will be available from the start of the course. To prepare for classes, students will need to read relevant sections of the lecture notes and formulate answers to the questions asked. Reviews involve applying the grammatical analysis built up during the course. Students should be ready to participate in the class activities using English.

参考文献／bibliography	Informed as needed 適宜講義内で紹介します。
