授業としての具体的到達目標 /Concrete arrival target as the class |
The aim is to develop a perspective that approaches history not solely through “great figures” or major events, but from multiple angles encompassing daily life, local communities, and the experiences of nameless individuals. Through case studies centred on British women's history, students will learn how history has been interpreted and narrated, understanding how the image of history changes depending on how sources are read and the differing perspectives employed. Furthermore, by undertaking small-scale research projects on Japan using microhistory methodologies, students will acquire fundamental historical research skills: formulating questions, collecting and organising materials, conducting analysis, and presenting findings. Additionally, through reading materials, presenting findings, and engaging in discussions in English, students will develop the ability to examine society, culture, and history from an international perspective, alongside communication skills enabling proactive exchange of views with others. |

授業の概要 /Summary of the class |
Until now, history has been taught primarily through the lens of so-called “great figures” – kings, rulers, and military leaders. While these individuals remain important, history is not solely comprised of famous names and major events. History also exists within our everyday lives, local communities, and the experiences of ordinary people. In this course, we will learn various perspectives and methods for interpreting history. We will focus particularly on the history of British women, a subject that has received less attention, examining their lives, social roles, and historical significance. Furthermore, for the final assignment, students will undertake a small-scale microhistory research project on a Japanese topic, learning basic research methods for investigating history independently. The course is conducted in English, but it centres on accessible materials, presentations, and discussions, making it suitable even for students who feel uncertain about their English. We place great importance on learning through exchanging ideas with fellow students. |
