To examine regional society and culture in relation to human ways of living, and to understand the structures that shape them. |

授業の概要 /Summary of the class |
• This course examines issues related to the preservation and transmission of intangible cultural heritage, using the classical martial arts (iai and kenjutsu) practiced by samurai of the former Hirosaki Domain as its main theme. • By studying fundamental bodily techniques that underpin Japan’s intangible cultural traditions—such as the “lowered-hip posture” and nanba (same-side limb coordination) movement—we will learn to relativize the assumptions that shape our modern, everyday bodily habits, including how we stand and walk. Students will cultivate a perspective that questions what we normally take for granted about the body. • Traditional martial arts practitioners will be invited as guest instructors, and students will have the opportunity to learn through direct experience the classical iai and kenjutsu transmitted in the Hirosaki Domain (Hirosaki-domain lineage of Hayashizaki Shin musō-ryū Iai / Bokuden-ryū Kenjutsu). • In studying classical martial arts, students will not only learn sequences of movement but also explore the philosophies and pedagogical methods characteristic of traditional intangible culture, considering together how skills are transmitted across generations. International students are welcome to participate. |
